Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global leader in security software, has been
a historical advocate in public/private partnerships to combat
cybercrime across the globe. Today, the company has announced that
it is among a group of security and technology leaders executing
Operation SIMDA to thwart a massive botnet. In addition to this
initiative, Trend Micro experts will present at the first-ever
INTERPOL World 2015 in Singapore, April 14-16, to highlight
security solutions to global law enforcement and security
agencies.
“Collaboration among technology, security and law enforcement
experts is paramount to staying ahead of sophisticated
state-sponsored and criminal cyber attackers,” said Eva Chen, CEO,
Trend Micro. “Operation SIMDA reinforces our longtime position to
join forces with other organizations whenever possible to establish
a unified front against those that use technology in harmful way.
In addition, we are honored to participate in the historical
INTERPOL World 2015 event joined by luminaries who share our
advocacy towards making the world safer for exchanging digital
information. As threat defense experts, we look forward to sharing
our knowledge and experience to support efforts to combat
cybercrime.”
Operation SIMDA is an initiative to eliminate a massive global
botnet said to have infected more than 770,000 computers worldwide.
SIMDA was used by cyber criminals to gain remote access to
computers enabling the theft of personal information, including
banking passwords, as well as install and spread other malicious
malware. Botnets are a fast-moving network of compromised computers
used to remotely launch cyber attacks or disseminate spam.
Disabling botnets requires skill, precision and timing to ensure
the threat doesn’t spread. In addition to Trend Micro and INTERPOL,
participants in the takedown included Microsoft and Kaspersky
Labs.
INTERPOL World 2015 is the first-of-its-kind, biennial event to
showcase innovation, potential and joint achievements among public
and private sectors in the security arena. It addresses the rising
demand for technology and public/private cooperation to meet global
security challenges in four primary areas: cybersecurity, safe
cities, border management and supply chain security.
During the event, Trend Micro will present five sessions and
booth presentations focusing on important topics including the
future of cybersecurity, underground activity, automated
cybercrime, zero-day attacks and targeted attacks. For additional

Research on the Cybercriminal UndergroundDiscover the
cybercrime economy profiles of Russia, China and Latin America.
Over time, cybercriminals have congregated to underground forums
and developed services, skills, business models and platforms to
make automated cybercrime a reality, even going so far as to
operate in the DeepWeb, the unsearchable part of the Internet.
- Crimeware: Automated Cybercrime
ExposedUnderstanding what crimeware is and how it works will
help to understand the methods used to avoid detection; and then
look at approaches that can be used to stop and respond to
crimeware.
- PreCrime: Are You Ready to Stop
Zero-Day Attacks? This take on the future of cybercrime shows
how a major cybercrime syndicate will launch a massive Zero Day
attack that will cripple the global financial markets. Law
enforcement in the future may have a new approach to catching the
bad guys.
- Targeted Cybercrime: Understanding
How Precision Attacks WorkDevising an effective defense
strategy against a cybercrime requires understanding of how a
targeted attack works, the various stages of an attack, the tools
and techniques used by the attackers. Having this knowledge is the
first step towards cybercrime defense.
