Amazon to ramp up Fire tablet production

Christmas seems to have come early for Amazon.com.

The online retailer (AMZN) said Tuesday the Thanksgiving holiday weekend marked a record sales period for its own devices, jumping more than three times compared with the Thanksgiving period last year. Amazon's Fire devices were the best-selling products across its platforms, with the tablet, TV and TV Stick among the favorites.

Sales of Fire TV alone jumped more than six times over the weekend, while tablet sales tripled.

"With a sub-$50 price point for one or $250 for a six-pack, we've reached a tipping point with Fire--it is our fastest-selling tablet ever. We've already built millions--and we're ramping up production to build millions more," said Dave Limp, senior vice president of Amazon Devices, in a statement.

Amazon shares rose 0.7% in premarket action.

Black Friday turned out well for other tech companies too. Analysts on Monday tipped Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) Black Friday performance to be the "strongest Friday sales (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/apple-may-have-had-best-friday-ever-this-weekend-2015-11-30) in its entire history," while Fitbit Inc. (FIT) was reported to have enjoyed strong holiday sales (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/fitbit-rises-after-reports-of-strong-holiday-sales-upgrade-2015-11-30).
