Ambiq Technology ("Ambiq") and the St. Petersburg Transportation
Authority signed a Technology Cooperation Agreement at an official
press conference on December 21. This Agreement establishes Ambiq
as a technology partner of St. Petersburg, providing products and
services based on its proprietary NFC mobile payment platform.
Ambiq has developed a complete solution that enables passengers to
use mobile phones to buy tickets to ride the public transportation
system, and it has been undergoing testing in the St. Petersburg
Metro since October 2010.
The system utilizes secure element Near Field Communication
(NFC) devices, which are designed and manufactured by Ambiq, that
are installed in standard mobile phones that work with the existing
Metro turnstiles, ground transport readers and connect to the
City's ticket management system. The benefits of this system
include: significant cost reductions and improved efficiency for
the city, as well as ease of use, and complete security for
passengers.
"The technology offered by Ambiq Technology is of interest to
St. Petersburg because it simplifies the procedure of buying
tickets and paying for transfer in public transport for passengers
in St. Petersburg. We know that this solution will be in demand
among citizens and guests of the city," said S.V. Popov, Deputy
Chairman of the Transportation Authority.
"We are greatly honored to be a technology provider to the
Northern Capital of Russia, a City known for its history of great
Universities, technology and innovation traditions. Our technology
will help advance deployment of state-of-the-art services that are
a first in Russia," said Misha Rozenberg, Ambiq's CEO. "In the
future, residents and visitors of the City will be able to pay for
meals, taxi rides, store purchases, public transportation -- all
from their mobile phone over our secure platform. We deliver
functionality that is unmatched in breadth, security compliance and
ease of use," Rozenberg said.
St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and has over
four million daily public transportation riders. The Transportation
System deployment is the first step in implementing Ambiq's unified
services platform, Secure-Z™, along with a unique hardware
solution, as part of enabling a mobile payment infrastructure in
St. Petersburg, to include other services, such as utility
payments, mobile banking, retail and other consumer payment
services.
